Skin Care Is Not Superficial

Updated: Feb 21

Because your skin does more than glow — it protects, defends, and reflects your whole-body health.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be invited to an evening hosted by Dermalogica and Ciovita — a beautiful collaboration of skin care and cycling. And while I initially showed up excited about the connection between movement and wellness, I walked away with something entirely different: a whole new appreciation for skin care — and how much I had underestimated it.

As someone who places so much focus on health, wellbeing, and self-care, I found myself asking: Why have I fallen behind with my skin care routine?

The answer, I realised, is simple: I was believing some of the most common myths about skin care.

The Myth of Superficial Beauty

Somewhere along the way, I absorbed the idea that skin care is purely cosmetic — something you do to “look good,” or worse, to look younger.

But the Dermalogica team, incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, helped shift that narrative completely.

Your skin is your largest organ. It’s not just about appearance — it’s your first line of defence against everything the world throws at you. For the last years, my routine was pretty basic: splash of water and some sunscreen. And while sunscreen is essential, that alone is not enough to keep our skin healthy and resilient — especially as we age.

Your Skin Is Your Shield — Especially Outdoors

What many of us don’t realise is that our skin plays a critical role in immune defence. It’s more than a surface — it’s a living, breathing barrier that protects our internal systems from environmental triggers that can contribute to chronic inflammation and even autoimmune conditions.

Pollutants, harmful chemicals, bacteria, allergens, and UV radiation all interact with our skin first. When that barrier is compromised — whether by damage, dehydration, or lack of care — those stressors can penetrate more deeply into the body, triggering immune responses that may not seem skin-related at all.

As someone who’s outdoors cycling almost every day, this hit home in a big way. My face, neck, and hands are constantly exposed — to wind, sun, dust, sweat, and city air. And while I’ve always focused on fuelling my body and staying strong for my rides, I hadn’t been protecting the organ that interfaces with the world the most: my skin.

Just like I wouldn’t skip wearing a helmet or hydrating on a long ride, I now see caring for my skin — cleansing it properly, hydrating it with quality ingredients, and protecting it with sunscreen — as part of the foundational tools that support my long-term health.

Skin Care Is Health Care

Our skin is constantly renewing and repairing itself. Proper cleansing, gentle exfoliating, and targeted nourishment can make all the difference in maintaining its strength and resilience. Just like how we care for our gut, heart, or muscles, our skin deserves daily attention too.

This resonates even more as I move through midlife. The things that used to work — pushing through poor sleep, tolerating stress, or bouncing back after too much coffee or wine — don’t work as well anymore. Our natural defences decline with age, and the same is true for our skin. That’s when ingredients like hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and barrier-supporting vitamins become essential.

And just to be clear: I’m not chasing youth. I like that I look more mature. I embrace the lines and contours that reflect my life, laughter, and growth. But I do want to look healthy.

I want to look like I feel — radiant, vibrant, and well cared-for.

My New Skin Ritual

Since that Dermalogica evening, I’ve completely up-leveled my skin care routine:

  • I now cleanse my face properly, morning and night

  • I use a gentle exfoliant daily

  • I apply a hydrating serum before my sunscreen in the morning and again before bed

And the results? I feel amazing. My skin is glowing, soft, and more even. But more than that, I now enjoy these few quiet moments in the morning and evening. It’s mindful, intentional time that feels grounding and nurturing — a little ritual of self-connection I didn’t know I was missing.

From the Inside Out — and the Outside In

For me, health has always been about balance: nourishing food, joyful movement, deep rest, emotional clarity. Skin care now has a place in that bigger picture — not just as a beauty routine, but as an extension of everything I believe in: supporting the body with intention and care.

So here’s to treating your skin like the vital, intelligent, protective organ it is.

It’s not about chasing youth — it’s about supporting vitality.

And your skin deserves nothing less.
